July 5, 2013 Update

Gulfstream Park opened its summer meet July 1st with an 8 race card that had total handle of $2.5 million, topping all but one of Calder’s first 50 race days.  That one day at Calder was Belmont day when Calder had total handle of $2.6 million on 12 races with four stakes races on the card.  Calder, for reasons known only to them, opted to not race on July 4th, but Gulfstream did and ran another 8 race card with one stake race and handled $3.3 million.  While Gulfstream’s handle numbers are off to a very good start, their average starters per race is 7.3, identical to Calder’s.

Today the contract committee had a meeting with Calder management to try to iron out a purse contract for the Calder meet which concludes on August 31st.   It went well and appears a purse contract could be forthcoming shortly.
