Each year The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association offers the opportunity to qualified, Florida licensed backstretch employees and/or their direct dependents to apply to its scholarship program. We are proud to announce 2020’s scholarship recipients:
Christopher Catanese – son of trainer, Joseph Catanese is entering his sophomore year at the University of South Florida (Tampa). Christopher aspires to be an athletic trainer for a professional sports organization. Christopher will be awarded a $4,000.00 scholarship.
Marbella Martinez – daughter of groom, Esdras Martinez, will be entering her junior year at Nova Southeastern University (Ft. Lauderdale). She is an Oceanography Major. Her goal is to be a chemical oceanographer and work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Marbella will be awarded a $4,000.00 scholarship.
Ashley Yodice – will be entering her senior year, is a Psychology Major also at Nova University. Her goal is to receive a PhD. In clinical psychology, doing behavioral research. While in school, Ashley is currently a Jockey Assistant for Eddie Plesa. Ashley will be awarded a $4,000.00 scholarship.
Patricia Henriques – is married to Hubert Brooks, assistant trainer for Kathleen O’Connell. Patricia is a student at Hebron Technical Institute, enrolled in the Licensed Registered Nursing program. Patricia will be awarded a $2,000.00 scholarship.
Greysi Isabel Teruel – is a hot walker for Juan Arriaga and formerly worked for Eddie Plesa. She is from Honduras and is studying to become a dialysis technician. She also received a letter of recommendation from Mark Abramson. Greysi was awarded a $2,000.00 to be applied to her account at the Active Health Institute.
