The thoroughbred world lost a champion of the game yesterday with the passing of 57-year-old Charles “Chuck” Simon.
Simon, a graduate of the University of Arizona Equine Program, was well versed with standardbreds and thoroughbreds alike.
He made his mark over the years training thoroughbreds in the highest of racing venues, retiring at Gulfstream Park in 2019, where he also served on the Boardof Directors of the FHBPA.
It was after leaving the rigors of the 24/7/365 life on the backstretch that he transitioned into the world of media, where he dazzled with his smarts, his wit, and passion for the sport.
Chuck proved to be a brilliant writer, his blog, Going in Circles, was an industry must read and was filled with anecdotes and lessons learned from his life’s journey.
There was never a question where Chuck stood on an issue, he could compliment where appropriate while calling stupid is as stupid does without fear of reprisal. Whether he was writing his thoughts, or guest appearing on his good friend Steve Byk’s radio program, his takes were refreshingly honest and frank about what was good and not so good in the industry he loved.
Chuck was what the racing wize guys of the 40’s and 50’s referred to as a “character”, he could have fit right in back then too, hanging on the rail wearing his variety of hats, sunglasses and a cigar in tow.
A hulking gentle giant of a man, Chuck Simon was a warrior in defense of our game till the very end. He made many many friends and his passion, humor and clear vision will be missed by all.
